Dornbracht ReCrafted: the fittings manufacturer is setting new standards when it comes to sustainability, by reconditioning its iconic designs by hand

Sustainability thanks to durable design
Balanced proportions, great precision, exact radii, and clean lines ensure that Dornbracht products retain their attraction beyond short-lived trends. “Good design means durability, means sustainability”, explains Michael Sieger, who owns Sieger Design and who has designed numerous Dornbracht icons. Stefan Gesing continues the line of thought: “We are obliged to take responsibility as a company. This aim is reflected in our ‘Leading Designs for Architecture’ claim. We act as pioneers and create products with a design that lasts. Dornbracht ReCrafted is the epitome of this promise, the development of a philosophy that we have pursued together with Sieger Design for more than 35 years.”

Years of experience in refurbishing fittings
From decoating, to polishing and re-finishing, to lasering, assembling and packaging – the path taken by a ReCrafted fitting in the Dornbracht production facility in Germany is shaped by manual skills, craftsmanship, and the expertise of on-site specialists. They preserve not only the brass body of the fittings, but also the intangibles essential for manufacturing. The integration of refurbishment into existing production processes is based on years of experience: The Dornbracht x-tra service has already spent more than 70 years implementing individual customer requests, which often also include renovating the fittings.

Dornbracht ReCrafted as part of a holistic sustainability concept
Dornbracht ReCrafted is part of a holistic sustainability approach that the company has pursued since its founding in 1950. One of its basic components is management of the supply chain. Designed for short transport distances, it is unique in the sanitary sector: 80% of the manufacturers’ raw materials and other materials come from Germany, and 98% from Europe. Most primary products come from less than 200km away. In 2015, Dornbracht also introduced an ISO 50001-compliant Energy Management System and has already been able to save 1.7 million kWh per year. Since the end of 2021, all electricity powering Dornbracht’s head office has come exclusively from renewable energy. In 2022, the fittings manufacturer also achieved certification under the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.
