A hidden gem behind monastery walls: the Botanic Sanctuary in Antwerp with fittings and shower solutions from Dornbracht
Iserlohn, 16 February 2023
Leave Antwerp’s bustling fashion centre behind and enter the cloistered seclusion of the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp: The five-star hotel occupies the former monastery and infirmary buildings hidden away amid the walls of the Botanical Garden. Visitors discover a lovingly restored retreat, where craftsmanship, innovation, ecology, and tradition, go hand in hand. Also present: Dornbracht fittings and shower solutions, created by Sieger Design.
The history of the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp goes back as far as 1238, when an infirmary was built at the gates of Antwerp, with the later addition of a monastery and a chapel. In the sixteenth century, the famous pharmacist Pieter Coudenberg established a monastery garden here – thus laying the foundations for the Botanical Garden that still exists today. The venerable buildings have now been restored and are being used by the five-star hotel. The task was to preserve the historic fabric of the building and at the same time, conform to the highest technical and ecological standards. What emerged was a tranquil and extremely comfortable retreat: Guests can relax here, surrounded by trees, rare plants and aromatic medicinal herbs.
A peaceful atmosphere and culinary excellence
The complex not only has 108 rooms and suites, but also several conference rooms, a spacious spa area, and a small chapel. Five restaurants, awarded a total of four Michelin stars, also ensure culinary excellence.
Only materials that reflect the special spirits of the buildings were used when designing the interiors: natural stone, warm wood, wrought iron structures, and fine fabrics. An unassuming, yet cheerful colour palette underlines the historic dimension of the location and takes up the green of the plants that are everywhere to be found. The light and peaceful ambience that this creates ensures well-being and profound serenity.
Puristic beauty: Vaia in Brushed Dark Platinum in the bathrooms
Fully in keeping with the cloistered surroundings, the bathrooms of the comfortable rooms have an understated design: plain white plaster walls, the washstand and floor made from anthracite-coloured, natural stone.
Two Vaia fittings from Dornbracht are positioned over white dish basins. Their classic, cross-handle look blends geometric and soft contours, while tapered rosettes create a smooth transition to the wall. The Brushed Dark Platinum finish contrasts strikingly with the light-coloured walls, yet has a soothing effect on the texture of the natural stone. More matching Dornbracht products can be found in the shower and on the rim of the bath. They complement the washstand fittings perfectly.
Relaxation in the spa area
In the spa area, Vaia has been used in changing rooms that are predominantly warm grey in colour. The touchfree version was chosen here, also in Brushed Dark Platinum. Here too, the earthy tone of the finishes accentuates the understated interior, and the colour is also precisely coordinated with the large mirror and cylindrical pendant lamps. The same combination is also present in the massage rooms.
With their balanced design language that masterfully combines classic and contemporary style elements, the Dornbracht fittings harmoniously augment the concept of the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp: bound by tradition, but firmly anchored in the present.
