Townhouse in Rotterdam: Interior designer Judith van Mourik sets the scene for Dornbracht and Alape products

Homely, lively, bright and stylish: this is how the latest project by Dutch interior designer Judith van Mourik can be described. In the “Townhouse” in Rotterdam, she once again demonstrates her sense for high-quality furnishings and special material combinations. She effortlessly combines simple elements with striking, unusual details. The result is a unique atmosphere in which modern trends and comfort are not mutually exclusive. In the kitchen and bathrooms, fittings by Dornbracht and washbasin solutions by Alape contribute significantly to this individual style.

Open design on the first floor
The “Townhouse”, a residential building from the 1920s, has a living area of around 160 m². The open floor plan of the first floor allows the kitchen, dining and living room to merge. Due to the flowing boundaries, the bright, large rooms invite communication. In addition to the deliberately chosen colours, a coffee bar serves as a separating element between the rooms. Here, a Tara Ultra as Hot & Cold Water Dispenser in Brushed Durabrass underlines the noble, exclusive ambience. The modern interpretation of the design icon is also used in the kitchen: In Dark Platinum matt, it provides a striking contrast to the light-coloured work surface. In the guest bathroom, which is also located on the first floor, an individual special version of Tara in delicate green was installed. This harmonises perfectly with the Folio washbasin solution.

Two different bathrooms on the upper floor
The two bathrooms on the upper floor could hardly be more different: Judith van Mourik integrated one directly into the bedroom. Vaia in Dark Platinum matt and the Aqua Deep Indigo bowl with a nuanced play of colours are at the center of the furnishings. Functionality and aesthetics are provided by the Assist storage system in the shower. The children’s bathroom is self-contained and kept entirely in white. Here, the designer mirror with dimmable lighting, the striking Metaphor sink as well as the Meta and Tara faucets in matt white underscore the clean look.

Focus on hospitality
The fact that Judith van Mourik’s projects focuse on the feel-good factor is due not least to her work for hotels. The interior designer has already impressed with the furnishings of numerous vacation domiciles, including Parc Broekhuizen in Leersum and the Relais & Chateaux Weeshuis in Gouda. With the “Townhouse”, van Mourik transfers the contemporary, trendy hotel architecture to the private sphere. The design-strong and functional equipment of the bathrooms reflect this impressively because they emphasise the luxurious, hospitable character of the house.

The balance of high-quality finishes with a pleasa The balance of high-quality finishes with a pleasant feel, the mix of muted and intense colours, and the exceptional textiles and wallpapers, all maintain the style of this Residential house in Erlenbach, but at the same time, set a new and contemporary tone. The new elements respect what is already there in a natural way, keeping with the spirit of architect Ernst Gisel.

TARA in the bathrooms has a reduced look and feel. A light, Italian travertine was chosen for the wall, floor, and rising surfaces to contrast with the highly textured, exposed concrete ceiling. This reduction to what is essential creates an unassuming atmosphere of clarity, which is particularly highlighted using the new Brushed Dark Platinum finish.

The look is complemented by META in the guest bathroom. In the Brushed Dark Platinum finish, the design meets the demand for modern minimalism, as well as for enduring aesthetic appeal.

Architecture with character His artistic ye Architecture with character

His artistic yet timeless approach to construction projects makes Swiss architect Ernst Gisel a role model for generations of creative architects. The special nature of his work is demonstrated impressively through the home that he designed in 1988 in Erlenbach, on the banks of Lake Zürich, which was converted by Victoria Maria Interior Design in 2022. The timeless modernity and unassuming clarity of the Dornbracht fittings, TARA and META in Brushed Dark Platinum, underline the new style of the house.

In the guest bathroom, the META fitting was chosen. It stands for modern minimalism and aesthetic durability – two principles that also symbolise Ernst Gisel’s and Victoria Maria’s approach to this project.

The Swiss architect Ernst Gisel created something special in Erlenbach near Lake Zurich: Differentiated spatial layers, expressive exposed concrete, rounded wall ends and a staircase connecting all levels characterise the ensemble of two semi-detached houses.

Interior designer, Victoria Maria, faced a correspondingly great challenge in its conversion: She managed to preserve the individual character of the house while at the same time setting new, exciting accents. The brutalist approach is complemented by cosy, elegant elements and a French touch.
An essential part of this was the redesign of the kitchen and the bathrooms.

The historic Palmaille in Hamburg is particularly The historic Palmaille in Hamburg is particularly impressive because of the buildings designed by the Danish architect and classicist Christian Frederik Hansen from 1786 to 1825.
This building was also committed to his heritage.

The material concept is based on a deliberately limited selection of materials whose surface treatment is largely intended to preserve the natural character. Sand-coloured terrazzo for the floor, natural fine plaster on walls and ceilings, walnut wood for doors and furniture, and architectural bronze for dividing rails and fittings predominate. For the terraces and open spaces, a cast stone with natural stone facing was chosen, which is oriented in appearance to the terrazzo floor inside the house.

Let us have a look at this one:

This building at the Palmaille was extensively glazed.
The terraces are accessed via glass sliding systems. The façade consists of a bronze-coloured powder coating.

The en-suite bathroom is separated from the bedroom by all-glass sliding doors. MEM is shown to its best advantage.
Floor-to-ceiling glass elements in a matt sand tone connect the bathroom and bedroom with a cosy atmosphere.
The layout of the main bathroom is designed to provide a view of the green space for washing, showering and bathing.

According to Einar Jone Rønning, owner of this residence, color is the new black — or white.

The kitchen features a wall of cabinets in varying shades of pink; the green-marble-covered island is moored by a brass base, that is indeed a eyecatcher.
The architects Andreas Nygaard and Heidi Pettersvold were inspired by the doors of the traditional tiled stove opposite the kitchenette.

When owner Einar Jone Rønning, gallerist and restaurateur, and his wife decided to move into their appartement, they wanted to push boundaries in terms of color and turned their backs on the all-white everything.
But not only this: they got further help from the architects Heidi Pettersvold Nygaard and Andreas Joyce Nygaard, of @snohetta the norwegian architecture firm.
